Some things I do when playing video games.
You may want to try these tips to help with your gameplay efficiency.
1. ALWAYS STAY CALM! Never EVER panic. If you feel completely overwhelmed you should...
Immediately pause the game.
Take a few breaths and gather what is happening.
If you are beginning to panic because you are being attacked, remember TARGET PRIORITY. Target priority is basically choosing which enemies to attack in which order. Target priority varies from what weapon they are using, to what form of attack they are using(say magic or melee), the toughness of the enemy, and what attack style you have.
2. Be decently trained with every attack style in the game. You never know when you will be forced to use a weapon you don't particularly care for. So you might as well know how to use it, and who knows, you might actually like it more that your favorite! I actually either use the starting weapon, or the weakest weapon throughout the whole game, unless i'm really havign a tough time, then I may switch to something else. This may sound really stupid or hard, but I find doing this makes the game more challenging which will make you better (or at least seem that way to your friends) when you use something people thing isn't a good weapon, and you are equally as good, or better, as them with it.
3. Pick your battles. Don't try to fight something you know you can't kill, unless it really seems like fun, and you recently had a checkpoint, or you recently saved your game. I'm not saying don't test your abilities, just don't be ridiculous... You know you can't take an army of dragons on yourself.
4. Play at your own pace. Play the game your way, not how someone else says you should. But you should still listen to advice, unless you don't want help (like me). You should also be sure to say you don't want spoilers though.
5. SAVE OFTEN. I can't stress this enough. Save when you aren't sure about an area. Save when you find something new. Save when you just did something hard. Save even when you don't think you need to. Theres nothing more irritating that doing something impossibly hard, and your power goes out, or you get the "Red Ring of Death", or you run into an enemy you didn't expect to find.
6. Do all of the side-missions, or optional quests. Unless your only intention is to beat the game as fast as possible, not even trying to have fun. Doing extra things increases the length of the game, which will provide more entertainment, and you may get some pretty cool rewards. For example, in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, when you do jobs for The Dark Brotherhood, you get FREE enchanted weapons. At a low level these weapons will probably be the best you will use for a while, and the side missions are very easy.

1st person shooters VS. 1st/3rd person RPGs
I personally thing 1st/3rd person (RPGs that can change between the view of your avatar or from an over-the-shoulder point of view) RPGs (Role-Playing Games) are better.
1st person shooters (Shooting games limited to the view of your avatar) are limited to only one point of view, and pretty much one main action (shooting). Eventually just shooting people is going to get boring. But 1st/3rd person RPGs could allow you to do to pretty much anything you want, depending on the game. Actions range from; driving cars, running through vast worlds, killing anyone you want (which hold consequences such as people not liking you), you could hunt animals, and practice magic and you could even do what 1st person shooters are limited to, shoot guns and bows and arrows.
Also, RPGs usually take much, much longer to beat as opposed to most shooters, which would provide more entertainment, and RPGs usually have amazing replayability, I will personally guarentee you could beat Elder Scrolls: Oblivion or Fallout 3 6 times and your experiences could be drastically different, and play it a 7th time and still not be bored of the game.
Unlike 1st person shooters, RPGs usually don't restrict you to follow a certain path, you can do virtually anything you want in that world. Such as in the entire Call of Duty series, all you can do is follow the main path and kill anyone along the way. Sure, you may be required to use a vehicle here and there, but if it were an RPG, you could choose to take the recommended items or vehicles, or just charge in unarmed.

Assassin's Creed
Assassin's Creed is one of the most amazing games I have ever played. It shattered Zelda's staggering 13 year record as my "favorite game series". I like Assassin's Creed because it is everthing I like in a game. It's got stealth, open fighting (which isn't required), a lot of stealth, gadgets, more stealth, it's very historically accurate, even more stealth, and it's got parkour (free running). Oh and STEALTHY AWESOMENESS LEAKING FROM THE T.V.
The first Assassin's Creed starts with Desmond Miles, a local bartender, being "observed". He is accually laying on a machine called "The Animus", which is used to retrieve the memories of people's ancestors. The people who are observing Desmond, you learn, are scientists of "Obstergo Industries". They are using the Animus to find a "Great Treasure" left behind by Desmond's Ancestors. The specific ancestor they are re-visiting he memories of is Altair Ibn-La'Ahad (1165-1257), a Syrian assassin.
